Volunteer Opportunities

We need your help to make the race a success! Please check out the position descriptions and estimated time commitment and then sign up for the position of your choice.

Check the list for ways you can get involved with Six Degrees of Navigation. Just fill in the requested information, select the opportunity you are interested in, and submit the form. You will hear back shortly about how you can help. All volunteers will receive a race t-shirt and post-race food.

Position Descriptions

Position Description Approx. Time Commitment
Major Positions
Publicity Advertise race 15-20 hours spread over 3 months before race
Timing/Results Set up electronic timing system; coordinate timing equipment dispersal; after race, distribute results in appropriate format to race director 5-6 hours of preparation before race. Day of race: 5-6 hours
Registrar Enter race participants' data; generate reports requested by race director 8-10 hours total beginning 1 month before race
Finish Lay out and set up finish area 3-4 hours beginning 1 week prior to race; 4-5 hours on race day
Food Organize post-race food 4-5 hours several months prior to race; 3-4 hours on race day
Awards Acquire awards 3-4 hours 1 month prior to race
Mapping Work with course planners to produce course map(s) 10-15 hours beginning 1 month prior to race
T-shirt Arrange for printing of race t-shirts; pick up shirts 5-6 hours beginning 1 month prior to race
Volunteers Work with Race Director to ensure that volunteers are in the right place at the right time with the required equipment; solicit volunteers as required; provide volunteer instructions as required 10-15 hours beginning now; 2-3 hours on clinic day; 5-6 hours on race day

Racer Check-in Check in teams, hand out race packets, answer questions Day before race (3-4 hours)

Checkpoint Monitor Monitor checkpoint to report progress of teams and to prevent theft/vandalism of e-punch units Race day (2-3 hours)
Special Test Administrator Administer special test during race Race day (2-3 hours)
Orienteering Start/Finish Hand out orienteering maps, collect at finish Race day (2-3 hours)
Photographer Roam the race course and take photographs; film and developing costs provided by club Race day (5-6 hours)
Kayak sweep Follow last boat on kayak course Race day (1-2 hours)
